My Individualism
Natsume Soseki
— Written at the Gakushuin Fukunin Kai on November 25, 1914
This is the first time I have crawled into the Gakushuin. I have always thought that the Gakushuin was probably this place, but I did not know for sure. Mr. Okada explained it to you so that you would understand, but at any rate, I had to decline the offer for the time being. However, I thought it would be too rude to just decline, so I added a condition that I would come back next time. I asked Mr. Okada when the next visit would be, just to be sure, and he replied that it would be in October of this year, so I roughly calculated the number of days between spring and October in my mind, and I thought that if I had that much time, I would be able to do something about it. I accepted the offer. However, fortunately or unfortunately, I fell ill, and while I was on the bed throughout September, the promised October arrived. Although I was no longer ill in October, it was a little difficult for me to give a lecture because I was a bit wobbly. However, I could not forget my promise, so in my heart, I was afraid that he would say something or come soon.
